Oliver! (don't forget the exclamation mark) was a book (and later a musical) adapted from the novel 'Oliver Twist' by Charles Dickens, with music by Lionel Bart and screenplay by Vernon Harris.

Please sir, I want some more.

It was just what it said on the label.... a musical. It was a musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, created by lionel Bart and I think it went to film straight away, and is an absolute classic in itself. it is lesser thann the book, but what musical isn't.. However it has some fabulous actors in in including Oliver Reed at his sultry best, Mark Lester, Harry Scombe, Dame Anna Neagle, jack.... Damn forget his last name (was the boy in Puffenstuff), Leonard Rossitor. Fab fab fab film. Great score,a nd thoroughly go couple of hours spent. I'm sure the stage productions are perfectly good too, but personally I would rather see the film versions of most musicals ever made than see them in the theatre.

If you are looking for social and historical comment... then only read the Dickens.. Dickens was a social commentator par excellance. The musical is a musical... innit... no comment.. other than it was made in 1969.. I think, and the first film I saw in a cinema... which probably explains my love of it.

The book is a whole other thing.. and I love that too in a completely different way

Oliver, 'The Musical'. Was a book, which became a play, and was written about it's time. Hence over time, an historical record.
