I've read most of Stephen Kings books, my favorite, hands down is The Stand [either the abridged or the long version].

The Talisman which he co wrote with Peter Straub is my second favorite.

And his best short story collections are Night Shift and Different Season [more novelas than short stories]

I am probably the last person who should be answering this, but as a new Stephen King reader I thought I would put my thoughts in.

The first story of his that I read was the Long Walk. I thought that was pretty good. Then I posted a question asking what everybody thought a good starter novel of Stephen King's would be. I got a lot of answers back and was pleased with the results, but I still didn't go out and check out a book. The question that prompted me to choose a book was a question asked in the movies category. That prompted me to go and check out the Shining. My impression of the book is that it is very well written. What first appeared to be ramblings of the author is just cleverly written. I guess you have to read his works and get used to his way of writing, before it will really make sense. It's still a creepy book, though.

I don't think I can say the Shining is my favorite, since it's the only King novel I have currently read, but it is a good read and would probably rank up there with the best books I've read.

I would have to say my favorite Stephen King book is The Stand. I enjoyed both the first version that came out and the re-release of the long version that came out in the 80's.

They are all wonderful and brillant books, but for me the best is the Stand. I have read it at least 14 times (both versions) and seen the tv adaptation (not too bad).

A close runner up is the Dark Tower series (if you can classify that as one novel, which most of us fans do).

I just finished "The Shining". It's my favorite so far. I have also read "Hearts of Atlantis" and It". "It" was the scariest! I couldn't dangle my feet over the edge of my bed for a week after reading that book. Sometimes it still freaks me out.

Gerald's Game is awesome. The Dark Tower series is very good too. And It scared the you-know-what out of me, even though the movie sucks.
