It generates AC current which is converted to DC and powers everything electrical in your car and also charges the battery.

Alternating Generator.
Chrysler devised them in the 1960s to replace the older generators. They charge the battery even while idling, at all speeds. Much better than the older generators which caused lights to dim while idling.

The Alternator sends a constant charge to the battery when you are driving the vehicle. So your Battery will stay charged. With out an alternator your battery would die.
