Well, on holiday, one would assume you wouldn't want some heavy tome that would require all of your attention to read...you would want something light that could be put down on a table somewhere when you want to go out.

I could recommend any mystery by John Lescroart, Jonathan Kellerman, James Patterson. The Da Vinci code is WONDERFUL but you will have a hard time putting it down.

"Undaunted Courage" is another good read, by Stephen E Ambrose. It is the story of Thomas Jefferson and Meriweather Lewis and the opening of the American west...fascinating. I guess if you are not from America, you might not be quite as thrilled but it is a good story, well written.

Try :

Skinny Dip - Carl Hiaasen
The Boy in the Stripped PJ's - John Boyne
Humble Pie - Gordon Ramsey
Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams

I'm not giving you 6 to choose from though. You seem to have had alot already suggested. I know Hitch Hikers isn't recent as well, but it's one you can keep going back to without any kind of problem, and it will still be just as funny as the first time.

What ever you choose, happy reading.

PS - Not recent, but try The Empty Chair, by Jeffrey Deaver. Couldn't put it down..

All worth reading, not too demanding.

Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell
Ghostwritten - David Mitchell
The Shadow of the wind - Carols Ruiz Zafón
The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova
The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
Never let me go - Kazuo Ishiguro
Labyrinth - Kate Mosse

If you like fantasy:

Dragonlance Chronicals - Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman

And if you feel like pondering the nature of mankind...

The Inheritors - William Golding

Skating to Antarctica by jenni Diski
Recent? I can't promise
The shipping News, Annie Proudx
Birdsong by Sebastien Faulks
The God of Small things by Aranduti Roy
The English Patient by Michael Andaatdji

I may be out on the spelling of these, and some you may know as films, but I chose them as they are far superior (and I liked the films too)

Take the Lee Child novels featuring Jack Reacher I read one on holiday once on the advice of another holiday maker. a nice easy read nothing heavy but excellent reading. I have since read all the novels and buy them as soon as they are published, there is no need to read them in order (although they do run in sequence) as each one stands out on its own.

Just bestsellers?

I can only name three that I've read that were worth recommending. They are three totally different genres too, so it would give you a variety:

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Wall
The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown (I know it's not REALLY recent but I've just recently read it)

Lee Child - start with The Killing Ground and work your way thru to his latest!

Gritty real-life American detective/private eye type novels, keep you on your toes until the last page.

Alternatively, anything by Robin Hobb but make sure you get book 1 of any of her trilogy's.
