I think both series are absolutely outstanding.
JRR Tolkien was an amazing writer and I'm very much anticipating the release of the new book finished by his son.
JK Rowling is also an amazing writer. I can't wait to see if she continues writing and if so, what directions she will go in next.

I've worn out a set of LoTR by re-reading it, but gave up on Harry Potter after the first two, finding the writing boring and the ideas derivative in the extreme.
Tolkien created an entire world, and in the tales there is much which doesn't relate directly to the plot. There is life, and death, going on all around.
From the entwives to Baldor the Hapless. It is not pared-down, it is rich.
Compared to that, Harry Potter is thin fare, plot driven stuff.
(I'm a little concerned about the responders that seem to confuse a book with its film. They are utterly different media.)

I like the Harry Potter books although I wish the plots were not so simplified. I'm not much of a Tolkien fan although I do own the books. My husband enjoys them very much but I find them kind of hard to read. I'd love to find a series that is well written and not as simple as Harry Potter yet not quite as long and detailed as LoTR.

Couldn't agree with Chris more, LOTR is the best story ever written and comparing it to Harry Potter is like comparing a 1.1Micra to a Ferrari Enzo. Tolkien was a genius, he describes everything so well that the films were exactly the way the story was in my mind. This of course is down to Peter Jackson's brilliant interpretation, but the book laid it all down so well. The party tree for instance is so well described, and the one used in the film is SO like it its unreal - I should know i've stood next to it!
If you're ever in New Zealand go to Mata Mata and see the Hobbiton set, most of it is still there, but behind the door its only about 10 feet deep, sadly all that was a filmset.

The Lord Of The Rings is a classic, it will still be a classic when my great great great great grandchildren are old and grey. Harry potter is also amazing but without the same otherworld othertime thing. the books by these authors are much loved by myelf and my family. Make sure you read The Hobbit by Tolkien too i first heard it as a child and so my love of books started

I love Harry Potter and i'm always reading fanfiction about it/them. But Lord of the Rings, for some reason I can never get interested in it. The book is boring (no offense) and the movies were boring (I fell asleep)
Maybe in a coupla years i'll try reading them again. see if my mind changes

Like 'Star Wars', they are over-long epics with clear battles between good and evil that could do with more jokes and less back-slapping about how the hero is the only one who can save everyone. Their authors, of course, are or were clever, hard-working people who have had huge success but there are more subtle or humourous examples of children's fiction eg. by Roald Dahl.
The Wind in the Willows, Alice in wonderland and Gulliver's Travels are some of the finest classic English children's literature. The Worst Witch, which Harry Potter seems to have been partly 'inspired' by, is also very good. There have been quite a few excellent children's books written that are much superior to adult fiction.

Lord of the rings = deep, meaningful masterpiece, cleverly written and deals with many themes that are important today, however, plot slows down at times and can lead to some readers skipping bits.
Harry Potter = About as deep as a puddle, nothing more than a nice story. Its all plot, but pleasant to read.
