The pistons go up and down, Their motion is transferred to the crankshaft by an offset. The crankshaft spins. The crankshaft is attached to the transmission by either a clutch (manual ) or by hydraulic fluid (automatic) . The transmission turns and thus turns the drive axels and the wheels.

Your engine is the energy source, which is connected to a drive transmission, from that point, it generally is connected to a drive shaft which goes to a rear differential that contain your axles which turn your wheels

Because the engine turns and is connected to the transmission and it rotates the tranny which turns the gears (when the car is in gear) that turns the axls and moves you forward

the crankshaft has a gear at the end which is then attched to a transmission and then a differntial then to the axle then to the wheels. gears gears and more gears.
