Some will say that we are created in God's image and are here to glorify him. Others will say we evolved. Still others do not give credit to a creator God but hold that we somehow are spiritual beings.
The ultimate answer may be found only in those who have died, and skeptics say they are not telling, or can't.

We are often underestimated. We are created in God's image and therefore we may be Gods too. I think this because we are extremely powerful individuals. Capable of overcoming amazing suffering (eg. mass genocides, ethnic cleansing survivors, transatlantic slave trade). Also capable of inflicting great suffering and inhumanity on others (Hitler, corruption, greed etc.) We create and end so many lives each day, that's how powerful we are.

We have the knowledge to create miraculous things. Just think about something we take for granted such as the Television, beamed into billions of households all over the world.

We have powers, which some dismiss as "women's intuition" or coincidence and dreams etc. There are those with special gifts, such as creating music or pieces of art which move so many people and evoke senses in a way which seems to remind us that our senses are refined to a level much higher than the basic survival mechanisms of other animals.

When we start taking ourselves seriously and realising what we're capable of, maybe our purpose in life will become evident and we'll stop acting out our lives as prototypes.

First off...I'm kind of disappointed in these other answers.. at least people are trying though. Not that I know my answer is right but at least I'm not going to tell you what you have already heard a million times..

I can't be certain but I feel more right than wrong. We are something like subatomic particles on something similar to an electron, going around something similar to a nucleus, in something similar to a molecule, eventually making something similar to us, function. Does that make sense? If not, ask me to explain further. =)

As far as what are we on the earth for? As opposed to another planet? ...have you ever seen Star Trek?! I don't want some kind of face dis-figuration! Haha, just playing. Our purpose on this planet, right? I thought about that for a while and came to the only conclusion I could. Continuity and experience. We aren't here for pleasure, for God, to save the universe, or because we are carbon, or anything else like that. Not that anything there is wrong but that isn't our purpose. Think about it. We indulge in pleasure, religion, and any other form of comfort and happiness we can find. But as our past and present predicts, when it comes down to it, we will do whatever we can to continue our species. People will kill to keep living. That same person that killed to stay alive, will die to keep their offspring alive. Sometimes we are deluded with our own misconceptions and do otherwise but as a whole, this is how we function. This is our basic of basic instincts. Why do we eat? to continue. Why do we sleep? To continue. Why do we drink, socialize, have sex, take care of our children? to continue. When i say continue, I don't mean just stay alive either. I mean continue to function in the best way possible. With sound mind, body, and being. These things are affected by our choices, but we all have our ability of choice and consequence. Now why did I say experience? Well through experience, we have become what we are today. Experience has brought us our technology, our wisdom, history, expectations, sense of being, and everything else we are. Through experience, we will better continue ourselves. So essentially it is only Continuity by itself. We have and collect experience to better continue ourselves. We do all this for continuity. It's all we got.

We are carbon based life forms that evolved on earth because the earth happened to have the proper conditins for life to form and evolve. Had our planet been a little closer or a little farther away from the sun, we would not be debating this right now.

We are on earth to live. We have no predetermined plan for our lives, it is our responsibility to come up with that for ourselves. Acomplishing this is extremely rewarding, though sadly some choose to give up this responsibility.

Last time I looked we were human beings. We're on Earth to make more human beings and to choose each day between good and evil.

Because Earth is the only planet on our solar system where the temperature differences between hot and cold is the lowest; therefore life evolves.

We are the things that live in earth...
so we have to take care the world so we can always live here for a long long time more.

We do it for ourselves, so why dont we just do it?
We must love ourself, aren't we??

I always thought the only reason why we do anything is to keep from being bored. Everything the human race does, with the exception of sleeping is in an effort to minimize boredom.

We are spiritual beings having a human experience. We are on the earth to glorify God.
There is no other secret to life. We just get caught up in the "reality of now." We can't remember where we were before we came, but surely we will return.

Many millennium ago we used to live on mars And despite warning's from the environmentalist we screwed up the martian atmosphere and some passing alien ship gave us a lift to planet earth. Funny how history repeats itself
