Changing them to same denominator and then to mixed number makes it easier subtract.

23 1/4 - 1 1/2

= 23 1/4 - 1 2/4 << change them to same denominator

= 93/4 - 6/4 << now to mixed fraction

= 87/4 << subtract them

= 21 3/4 (Answer)

ps. 21 3/4 is same as 21.75 << 3/4 * 100 = 75

----------------------------
Another method. Could be a little confusing if you are new to whole/mixed numbers and fractions... you could ask someone else to explain this to you.

23 1/4 - 1 1/2

= 23 1/4 - 1 2/4

= 22 (4/4 + 1/4) - 1 2/4 <<<< [The confusing part.. but soon you should understand it.]

= 22 5/4 - 1 2/4 <<<<< [ 22 - 1 = 21 ] [ 5/4 - 2/4 = 3/4 ]

= 21 3/4 (Answer)
