Why points on toilet paper?

Why do hotels and other places like that fold points on the ends of toilet paper? Whoever got the idea that this is a service desired by their customers? Where did this custom originate?

Well, nobody folds the ends of their toilet paper into points at home, so I guess points on paper in a hotel indicates that your room has recently had the benefit of room service cleaning it, they want you to know they are on top of cleaning.
