Our 1997 E420 is not starting, cranks but does not catch on. Also when I open the doors the fog,side and low beam lights will flash for a minute or so then stop. What would that indicate?

Could be a security anti-theft system is malfunctioning. It would probably keep your fuel pump from running so that the car can't be started. There may be error codes stored in one of your computers, like the BCM (Body Control Computer). Your dealer might be best to deal with it if it's a security problem since dealers have all the inside knowledge of how the security systems work. Call your dealer and ask.

It sounds like a problem with the security/ anti-theft system. Try the other key. Lock then unlock the doors with the key, then try to start.
If that doesn't work, call the garage. May have to replace the ignition lock.

Lock all the doors and close them. Wait for a minute and unlock the drivers door with the key. That should disable the security system that some people don't know they have.

Have you tried replacing the batteries in your key?
