Hypnosis is not magic...But it does help tremendously if you really want to stop...As a 30+ year veteran hypnotist let me tell you my "best method"...Combine hypnosis with "The Patch" or some "physical craving" aid. You are then working both the physical and mental cravings, and the results are excellent.

I have heard that it works by many people but I tried it twice and it did not do a thing for me, I also tried the patch and that worked very well as long as I put it on in the morning before having a smoke. Now last june 1st I said a simple prayer to stop smoking and I have not had a cigerette since and I have had no withdrawal to speak of. I started smoking when I was 18 I am now 42 and on top of that every day I run 3 miles with a weighted vest and snow boots, the average temp here has been 90 degrees. I am not preaching I am simply telling you what worked and what did not work for me, what ever you do, quit. I feel 1000000x better. I wish you the very best luck.

I know several people who this has definately worked for. You have to really be ready to quit, tho. If you're doing it because you think you should or a Dr. says you should , it may not be as effective. If you aren't ready yet , go to visit some people in the hospital. Visit the respiratory therapy ward. There are folks there that would love a visitor.
Also , if after your treatment with the hypnotist ,you DO start smoking again, they will usually do the treatment again for free.

Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation: A Review

Surprise, of all the researched methods, hypnosis comes out on top..
Because we receive a lot of questions about hypnosis for quitting smoking, we have been doing some serious investigating. We have done a review of the research, interviewed experts, and have sampled a plethora of audio hypnosis programs that claim hypnosis can help with smoking cessation.

The Good News

The good news is that we learned that hypnosis can be highly effective for smoking cessation; research shows that when done correctly the success rate is slightly above 66%. Compare that to the success rates of trying to quit on your own: 5%, using behavior therapy 25%, or using Nicotine Replacement Products, 25% and hypnosis looks like the best option out there. In fact, there is no other method supported by research that even comes close.

BY THE WAY, BEWARE OF ANY PRODUCT CLAIMING A 99% SUCCESS RATE – IT SIMPLY CANNOT BE TRUE

The Bad News

It turns out that in order to get the 66% success rate, you have to pay attention to a couple of details. First of all, it requires at least 4 sessions. Yes, this means that all of those one session promises and traveling group hypnotherapy sessions are pretty much worthless. Secondly, there is a specific protocol used that only licensed psychologists have access to that the research is based on. When choosing a hypnotherapist, it is extremely important that the therapist be a licensed psychologist, otherwise the results will not even come close to the 66%. One thing we can tell you after this investigation is that the quality of hypnotherapy varies widely and it is very important to do your research before choosing a therapist.

Finding a qualified therapist is extremely difficult, and if you do find one - expect to pay at least $200 a session. So you are looking at spending at least $800 for effective hypnotherapy if you do it in person. If you settle for someone with just a CHT after their name, you are just wasting your money. You need to make sure they have a doctorate in psychology and can provide with proof that they are licensed to practice mental health in the state in which they practice.

It can, it depends on the skill of the hypnotist and the suggestibility of the subject.

It might. I am sure it does effect everyone differently. I quit smoking 3 wks ago with Welbutrin. I haven't hurt anyone yet. That is an accomplishment for me since I have smoked for 10yrs. Good luck!
