There are risks in any undertaking. Some are known in advance, some are not. We always consider risks and benefits whenever we make any decision. If I could choose to have every human on earth know God by dying tomorrow, I wouldn't hesitate. If I could choose to have the correct theory of quantum gravity for the same price, I'd have to think about it.

If I were utterly facinated by my work, my work would help people in the future, and my work was my life, I would not mind dying as a result (though I'd probably be kicking myself on the deathbed for not figuring out the danger in time to protect myself).

While scientists aren't the usual type of person you think of as heroes, when the work is helpful and exploratory, it is a heroic way to die--and we all have to go somehow and sometime. It's like braving the unknown by being an explorer, but instead of landing on a new continent or the moon, you are discovering knowledge.
