I have road runner, cable internet. I have a desktop computer and a laptop computer and a wireless router. For some reason, the other day, the Internet speed on the desktop dramatically decreased! I tried to download a 10MB test file and I was only getting about 6Kbps, while on the laptop I am getting 500Kbps on the same file, if not more. Both computers are connected to the wireless router, however the desktop is a wired connection. Everything has worked fine in the past, and this happened just at once. Any ideas?! I've ran spyware doctor and tcp optimizer with no results.

It is possible that your wireless router is not seured with proper password and some one had access to it at the same time you use it. Check this aspect.

Try clearing out your internet temp files.... and reseting your router. Often times the more computers you have connected to a router, wireless or wired, the slower it's going to run. If you're laptop is right next to your router and it's running less that 54 Mbps, then you should try reseting your router, usually a button on the back.

Try using this program. It's called ccleaner, it cleans internet temp files for IE, firefox, etc.

The internet could have been busy at the time. But I have had the same problem. I have 2 computers hooked to the same dsl modem and when they are both on, the speed seems to slow down.

I called a tech about it and he told me that it is because the one modem is trying to give juice to both computers.
