Most computer damage is caused from turning the computer off and on. It is best to leave the computer on at all times if you tend to use it frequently. However, this uses more electricity and in times of storms/electrical surges can be dangerous also. But leaving the computer on is best in most cases.

It is usually better to leave your computer on all the time. I wouldn't be concerned for your processor fan failing and damaging something because most motherboards have a feature that shuts your computer down when it gets too hot. but if you have a fan on your video card or other internal add on component that fan can fail and damage whatever component it is. Just remember this can happen if you have problems. As far as your computer being damaged from lightning or power surges you should have a surge protector on your computer and though suddenly turning off your computer can mess up your computer by potentially losing data it will not damage the components. So, short answer it is ok to leave your computer on.

I never leave mine on when I am not using it. I've known PCs to become sluggish if left on or allowed to hibernate for prolonged periods of time.
Newer PCs are supposed to be able to handle being left on, but in my experience this isn't a good idea. The PC I have now belonged to a friend who used to leave it on for a long time, and he often had to reboot it because it would become so slow.

You can leave it on all the time without damage but if the fan craps out it'll definately cause damage. I burned up a processor and a power supply that way.

If it's a laptop yes, laptop were not created to be left on long period of time.
Desktops were created that way, while it is okay to leave it on for days at a time, it is good to turn it off and give it break every now and then.

Yes, but if it is not doing anything, you are just wasting electricity and contributing more to greenhouse gases. The PC was not designed to run for a long time doing nothing.

It is OK to keep it on for a long time. If you desire to update Windows software automatically, it requires to restart you computer when it's updated.
Keep your eye on the hardware in order to prevent the overheating. If you have cable Internet, I suggest to run firewall or disable Internet connection when you not using your computer to prevent viruses and hikers, etc.
