No! Don't Reformatt. Use that as the !L.A.S.T! alternative.
Try booting it, and run it and try it again...does it turn off again?
Are you running a laptop? If so, see if the battery is charged.
Did you recently install software? If so, try uninstalling it.
Have you done a virus scan lately? If not, get a good antivirus program, and scan your PC.
Have you tried booting in Safe Mode? If not, try that, and see if it turns off automatically.....if it does, then try this.
Boot Windows Normally. Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
Restore your PC to an earlier state before your PC started doing this. See if it still does it. If it does, read on.
Have you added new hardware lately? If so, remove it, and then try it again. Then plug it back in, and reinstall drivers.
If NONE of this works, THEN back up ALL needed data, and then reformat. Reformating, is'nt a novice task, if you aren't comfortable with complicated computer tasks, then email me, and I'll help you through it.
If it STILL does'nt work, after reformatting, then it is your PC.
Try all my suggestions, and everyone else's, and THEN if it does'nt work, email me, and I'll help you reformatt.
Regards

That is not necessarily the case. If it shuts DOWN while using it, that is most likely a software issue. But, if it just turns itself right off (no power), It is probably more likely to be something with the hardware. First check is to try a different plug. Sometimes "dirty power" from a certain plug can cause that. If that doesn't remedy, you might be looking at a new power supply. If you have added anything to the computer recently, if might be overloading the supply. If you do replace the supply, I recommend at least a 350 watt, or even more if you have high-end hardware (several drives, advanced video card, etc.) I would like to add, however, that if you see a blue screen with white text display for just a split second before power off, then you are back to software issues, which could then mean an OS reinstall.

My desktop does that too. It does it at random times, it will just shut off with no warning. I sprayed the insides with that air duster stuff, and that helped a little, but i think something is wrong with the computer's power supply.
Since this is a 3 year old $500 compaq i bought at walmart, im not going to spend any money on it...i just deal with it.

well is there something in particular you are always doing when it shuts off? does it give you any kind of error message before it shuts off? try scanning for viruses first. reformatting is always the last resort since you will lose everything on your hard drive. hope this helps. feel free to e-mail me with further questions.

It is not ALWAYS OS or software related. Sometimes it could be due to power supply instability. This can only be verified by buying or borrowing another PSU. Sometimes it could be due to an overheating processor or videocard especially if the casing is not well ventilated. Sometimes it is RAM related.

Dose it restart or shut down?...If It restarts then during the set up keep pressing F8....A screen will pop up...go to 'Safe Mode with Networking'....from there scan your computer for viruses...The problem should be easily fixed!
