I've found that putting up squirrel feeders in a different location helps. If they have a ready supply of food thats easier to get they will go to it instead.Moth balls will keep them away but may keep some types of birds away as well.

You can hang the feeder on a line and wait until the smart squirrels figure out how to get it.that will stall them for a couple of days. You need to get a squirrel proof bird feeder and there are tons of them out there some work some don't squirrels are very smart when it comes to bird feeders...

I hung my bird feeder from the end of 10' piece of 1/2" electrical conduit bent in the middle to a 45 degree angle and placed in a hole in a concrete base (from the base straight up, the off at 45, with a heavy wire stuck in the end to hang the bird feeder from. Never had squirrel problems because too small to grip, too steep, too high to leap. If the squirrels are coming down from the top, a cone shaped "Chinese hat" loosely mounted on the wire will tilt and dump them. If coming up from bottom a similar device - if they can't jump past it - or one of the spinning plates seems to work well. Some people put out corn on the cob to feed the squirrels away from the birds.

They have bird feeders that close when something heavy (like a squirrel) stands on them but don't close when birds land on them.

no, the problem isn't the vessel, cuz squirrels can get in any of them, it's making the squirrels go away. a small dog might be helpful, depends how playful it is. squirrels can be very easily scared, if you've got garden sprinklers, they're gone.

With aggressive outdoor cats. The squirrels pretty much stay in the trees and chirp at you, or scould you. Anyway they don't like the cats around.
