The Christ was born about 4 to 7 B.C. around the month of June or July.
The reason His birth is celebrated by mass has to do with the history of Catholicism. When the early bishops, and leaders of the denomination felt that the Christ's birth should be celebrated they chose a Roman holiday already in existence at that time. It was the holiday of the pagan god Saturnalia. In this holiday the Romans partied because the winter solstice had just passed and longer days were coming to bring the spring. Here the Romans had a tradition of exchanging gifts, and the early leaders of the Catholic denomination adopted this by explaining that the wise men also brought gifts to the Christ.
It is called Christmas because it is a Mass for the Christ in celebration of His birth as a son of man. It wasn't exactly a birthday party, but you wouldn't know that these days the way the general public celebrates His birth.

Romans celebrated the birth of Mithras, the soldier's god, on December 25. When Constantine the Great converted Rome to Christianity, he usurped that date as the date Christ's birth was celebrated. A lot of our holidays and ways of celebrating them were adaptations of pagan holidays, like All Saints Day, to combat the pagan holiday of what became Halloween. Symbols used in spring festivals, like eggs and rabbits, were incorporated into Easter.
We don't have any real reference in the Bible as to when He was born. The closest we have is the reference that the shepherds were grazing their flocks by night. In the Middle East, they still do that in April and May, because it's too hot to do it in the day. It would be too cold to do it in December or January.
An astronomer ran a computer program to simulate what stars were in the sky at the possible times Christ was born. The 3 "kings" were portrayed with a certain type of head dress that only the Persians wore. They were master astronomers, and considered Jupiter to be the king star. Toward the end of May, 5 B.C., Jupiter appeared to be very bright in the constellation they associated with the Jews. They would have taken this as a sign that a King of the Jews had been born. This is the best evidence we have of when He was born.

there is a whole book out telling about the star that the wise men saw, and how it was most likely a line-up of a bunch of planets, and how it happened on either September 15 or 16th. december 25th is a pagan holiday celebrating that fact that the short days of winter are getting longer, known as winter solstice.

Jesus was Jewish the calendar they used in those days was a Jewish calendar then there were Julian calenders and there is the thing about the calendar off by one day so they wanted it more accurate so they came up with the Gregorian calendar which has been in use to this day.
A lot of it was based on the historical references, like when the Roman census was taken, there was a lot of discussions over the date but it was settled on this one, more information on the complexity of the debate at

no person is conscious for specific. What we do recognize is that the shepherds have been in the fields tending their sheep, so that's suspected that it strengthen into for the duration of a very warmer and drier time of the 365 days, probable Spring or early summer season. (So i've got been instructed.) Why Dec. twenty 5th? custom. Constantine, while he grew to become the emperor claimed to be Christian. although, he certainly tried to soothe absolutely everyone. The Romans held a competition to their "sunlight god" on that day, and weren't approximately to offer up having it. He declared that Christ's birthday could be celebrated rather, yet on the comparable day. i'm unable to remember the place I found out this all from, yet with a splash analyze into Christian heritage books could permit you recognize.

Jesus was most likely born by March or April, for what I've read and heard.
Then, just as Jewish Easter We (christians) also celebrate but with a different intent, Dec25 just came to be a "good date", according to other prevalent religions calendar, therefore, the Church's authorities of that time decided it was a good idea to have it accomodated by then!
Good luck! Bear hugs! ;-)
