PCMCIA - it stands apparently for 'Personal Computer Memory Card International Association' but I prefer to think of "People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms"

They are often just called PC Cards for short, and some brands call them CardBus slots.

Standard and older PC's have one or two 'Card Slots', also known as PCMCIA. These each are about 2" wide and 3" deep.

The new slot interface showing up more and more is only about 1" wide and 2 inch deep is called "Express Card" and should take over the PCMCIA if things go well as it's better and faster.

If it is a slot about the width of a credit card and about 1/4 inch thick, then that is a PCMCIA slot, if it is significantly smaller then that, that is a card reader.
