Radioactive iodine is the most widely recommended permanent treatment of hyperthyroidism. This treatment takes advantage of the fact that thyroid cells are the only cells in the body which have the ability to absorb iodine. In fact, thyroid hormones are experts at doing just that. By giving a radioactive form of iodine gives off a poisonous type of radiation, the thyroid cells which absorb it will be damaged or killed. Because iodine is not concentrated by any other cells in the body, there is very little radiation exposure (or side effects!) for the rest of the body. Radioiodine can be taken by mouth without the need to be hospitalized. This form of therapy often takes one to two months before the thyroid has been killed, but the radioactivity medicine is completely gone from the body within a few days. The majority of patients are cured with a single dose of radioactive iodine. The only common side effect of radioactive iodine treatment is underactivity of the thyroid gland

Hi Randy

Hyperthyroidism is due to an excess amount of free thyroid hormone. There is a generalized increase in metabolic rate, with an increase in oxygen use.

Hyperthyroidism means the thyroid gland is overactive. A common cause is Graves' disease, in which the immune system produces antibodies that act like TSH and stimulate the thyroid gland uncontrollably. The gland responds by producing an excessive amount of hormones. The goitre is caused by this massive overstimulation. Some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism include a racing and irregular heart, restlessness, unexplained weight loss, heat intolerance and diarrhoea.

Homeopathy offers good prognosis to cases of hyperthyroidism.

Calcarea carbonica. [Calc] in 30 potency shold be taken 8 hourly preferably 30-45 minutes before or after eating or empty-stomached.

In simple goitre in those of strumous diathesis this remedy has been used successfully. Cured cases on record are numerous. Dr. Zopfy, of Germany, who has had much experience, claims the remedy will cure most simple cases within a very few weeks. Calcarea iodide is also a very useful remedy. Flouric acid is another remedy useful in simple cases.

Hi Randy, Well, marine phytoplankton has come to be known as thyroid health food. The electrolytes and nutrients marine phytoplankton possesses are what the human body needs to control metabolic rate. Another natural supplement for thyroid support showing positive results in studies is the juice of the go-ji or lyceum berry from Asia. The fruit is seen as an immunomodulator - it can balance abnormal responses in the body and is seen by many as a natural treatment for thyroid problems.

Well, kelp is a combination of vitamins, minerals and supplements and has been said to work well in the treatment of thyroid problems. If you are on thyroid medication, be sure to take a good multivitamin with minerals and a few grams of Vitamin C everyday. Vitamin A is also very essential for the treatment of hypothyroidism as enough of it must be present in the body to enable the gland to absorb enough iodine. Adding Vitamin A to your diet could not only prevent thyroid problems, it could also help alleviate the symptoms if you suffer from hypothyroidism. Make sure your food is rich in copper, which means that you will have to include thyroid foods like yeast, offal, nuts, raisins, and eggs. Just a little care and you could minimize your problems and offer thyroid support.

Have the doctors totally ruled out thyroid down-regulators such as methimazole and/or propylthiouracil? And if so, have they explained *why*? Hyperthyroidism is a serious condition requiring *real* medical treatment, which you won't find in the realm of Internet homopathy scams or quack spinal adjustments.

If you have an overactive thyroid, eat plenty of raw cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, and collard greens, which contain a natural thyroid blocker. Avoid iodized salt and iodine-containing foods, including saltwater fish and shellfish.

Vitamin C: 1,000 mg a day.

Vitamin B Complex : 50 mg each morning

Vitamin E: 200-400 IU /day.

Flax seed oil : 1-2 tablespoons/day.

Relaxing teas: Chamomile and Melissa

Essential oils: Geranium is balancing for the thyroid gland. Use in the bath or for a gentle massage.

thyroid activity is affected by the amount of iodine it gets; if there is too much iodine, you get hyperthyroidism, if too little, hypothyroidism; are you sure it is hyper and not hypo?
how do you determine which one you have? a simple test with tincture of iodine (bluish to violet in color); spread a thin layer about the size of 1 inch diameter on a "hidden" part of your skin; the skin will absorb the iodine; if it spot is gone in a few minutes, you are lacking in iodine (hypo), if it takes up to a day to disappear, you have too much (hyper);
one common symptom of hyperthyroidism is being thin despite the quantity of food you eat; nothing you eat seems to stay in your body; both hyper and hypo are dangerous conditions which can prove fatal;
assuming it is really hyper and not hypo, avoid foods that contain lots of iodine; try googling for it but off hand, fish and marine products are generally rich in iodine, as well as some leafy vegetables (such as malunggay);
