No. The U.K. is "supposed" to be a free country. If there is no-one (in your own opinion) worth voting for, then you shouldn't be forced to vote. But then don't complain about who is "ruining the country" when whichever party gets elected. For myself, personally I do use my vote.

This is basically a partisan issue. Polling shows that of the 40% of eligible Americans who don't vote, 60% of them don't even know who the Vice President is. They're completely uneducated and uninformed voters who would be making their choice based on God knows what - which candidate was taller? But polling also shows that 55% of them have a favorable impression of Barack Obama, whereas only 25% of them have a favorable impression of Mitt Romney. The bottom line: with compulsory voting, Mitt Romney wouldn't have a bat's chance in hell in the election. If you forced these uneducated voters to fill out a ballot, a lot of them would think "Well, I don't really know what these guys stand for, but, man, that Mitt guy looks old and creepy." Enough that Obama would win in a massive landslide, with Romney probably capturing fewer than 100 electoral votes. As long as Republicans have enough political power to prevent it, there will never be compulsory voting.

No. We live in a democracy that gives us the right to vote and that gives us the right to choose whether we want to or not.
I just think it is a shame that people decide not to use that right, something that has been fought for over many hundreds of years. I just wish people would consider their voting options more and vote for the party or person they believe in the most & matches their views, nevermind whether or not they think it's worth it or believe that 'there's no point as they wont win'. Just think what would happen if every who was put off by voting for that reason actually did vote. You never know, it could turn British politics on it's head.

Compulsory voting will never be introduced in the UK.
The reason is simple.
Everyone who is forced to vote will vote Monster Raving Loony.
We will end up with someone in a funny hat and a spinning bow tie as PM.
Sounds like a good idea.

Yes, it should be compulsory for everyone entitled to vote to be issued with a ballot paper. This can be done by using the postal voting system or by turning up in person at the polling station.
Only once it has been issued to you should you have a choice of what to do with it.
You don't need to vote....the choice is entirely yours, but remember not to complain later if you don't like what you get.

Yes, our grandparents struggled and died to get us the right to a democracy. One vote every 5 years is not much but not voting is like abstaining and sleep walking like the waking dead!
If you must vote then there will always be a box for spoilt papers or Refusenicks!
Wake up and smell the roses!

If we did have compulsory voting I think it would be essential to change voting ballot papers to include a "none of the above" option for those of us who feel that none of the current crop of political parties represents our views.

No I don't. What I think is anyone who complains about government should be required to first show proof they voted in the last election.
