Both BusinessWeek and US News rank US B-Schools on their web sites.

My ranking is as follows:

1. University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)
2. University of Chicago
3. Stanford
4. Northwestern (Kellogg)
5. MIT (Sloan)
6. Duke (Fuqua)
7. Harvard
8. Dartmouth (Tuck)
9. University of California at Berkeley (Haas)
10. University of Michigan (Ross)

Others that are close include Cornell, UNC, Virginia, Yale, NYU, Columbia and UCLA.

As for what you need to get in:

You need a good GPA -- but GPA is less important for an MBA than for other graduate programs. A 3.3 from a good school or a 3.7 from a school that is not rgeat will be good.

GMAT -- the average score at the top schools is about 700.

Work experience -- the top schools want 4-5 years experience.

Diversity -- the top schools want a diverse group -- so if there is something about you that stands out, that is a good thing.

Essays -- your essays are critical. Get someone who has gone to a top B-School to read them. Make sure that spelling and grammar are perfect.
