Insurers usually supply a Cover Note within 24-hours of setting-up a policy and this can be used until the certificate is received. I think you should give your insurers a ring to clarify whether or not it's legal for you to go onto the road with neither a certificate or cover note. (As long as they can give you a policy number, I would think it would be fine). If they say it's OK, ask the name of the person you're speaking to and make a note of it, along with the time and date of the call - 'just in case'!

The majority of online Insurers websites will allow you to print off some form of document to prove your cover, it may be only a cover letter or cover note rather than a full certificate until they have cleared your payment from the bank - some types of payments can be reversed by the payer so they have to be careful. Some also only issue a year's certificate if you pay in full, if you pay by monthly instalments they can wait a month until your next instalment at the bank clears before they issue a certificate for a year. They will then post the certificate within a few days. However, a few Insurers are now giving the option of online documents to be printed off free of charge, or posted documents at a small charge. For example, Aviva are currently offering posted documents for £3.00. The answer to your query is therefore that it all depends on how you pay your premium and which Insurer it is.

The insurance co. will usually supply a cover note giving the date the insurance cover starts and the time this normally lasts for 30 days until the full insurance certiflicate arrives. If it hasnt arrived by that time give the insurance co a ring.

You should have a cover note, a small piece of paper that states you have paid and in order in case you are stopped by the police or if you have an accident, you must have PROOF, if you have not then go to your broker and ask for it.

As long as you have the confirmation of the start date, you should be fine.
