I hate covering myself with thick jackets because i'm not used to wearing that.I'll be in new Zealand by july and it is the middle of winter.

Kiwi men - fashionable??
LOL.
Most of the men I know either wear jerseys (woolen or wool-blend sweaters, to you) or else hoodies (hooded sweatshirts). My partner just wears a light jacket made of a synthetic like Polartec.
You didn't mention where in NZ you'd be heading... Don't worry, unless you're going to Stewart Island or Scott Base or Invercargill you're not going to freeze.
You might just forget about bringing a winter coat. Why don't you wait until you get here and see how 'cold' it really is? There are plenty of shops at the airport where you can buy a Kiwi jacket, or better yet visit one of the local opportunity shops and pick up a nice 2nd hand jacket if you really feel you might freeze....

Men - proper men in New Zealand will wear during winter the following:
a black woollen singlet,
Jockey or Hanes briefs,
a woollen long-sleeved shirt usually with the sleeves rolled up,
a pair of shorts, most likely denim,
a pair of woollen socks,
a pair of gumboots.
Depending on the weather, they can add-
a beanie, woollen oilskin or felt hat,
a woollen jersey,
and a Swandri.
Wool is used for its ability to absorb moisture without feeling wet or cold, and to provide insulation.
Leather boots may be worn instead of gumboots.
For those who spend all their time outdoors, in inclement weather, an oilskin coat will replace the Swandri.
Long trousers are worn if horse riding is being done.

I believe I did back in the 60's. Ever hear of Mary Quant? I had a Mary Quant knock off dress that was gosh awful ugly. I thought I looked SO cool!

We wear everything in our wardrobes in the back of the cave and very rarely go out

Black rugby sweater.
Then, when they choke at the World Cup (again) they wear a black rugby sweater as a sign of mourning. That is why they wear black stuff when they play sport. Saves money.

Men don't wear things to look fashionable. Only regular girls and girls with balls wear things to look fashionable.
