I'm glad to see so many votes for Batman already- with Jack Nicholson's great one-liners and masterly performance (he should have an Oscar but, then, so should have Robin Williams and Jim Carrey for some of their films), Keaton's beautifully understated anger and passion, music by Prince and Danny Elfman and great set pieces, it is flawlessly constructed and will always be the best film of a comic book character in my opinion.
Some of the other films I mention could go my top 5 but here are 5 great films (interestingly the first 2 films I mention were on at the cinema at the same time).
1. Batman (1989)
2. Dead Poets Society (1989)
3. Scream (1998)
4. Dirty Dancing (1987)
5. American Beauty (1999)
I also really liked Labyrinth, Mrs Doubtfire, Forrest Gump, Mary Poppins, Edward Scissorhands, any Micheal J Fox film inc Back to the future 3, The Fugitive, The War of the roses, Romancing the stone, Indiana Jones and the last crusade, Jurassic Park, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Platoon, Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory (the 1971 Gene Wilder film), the Scream trilogy, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, National Lampoons Summer Vacation, American Pie, Home Alone, The Cable Guy, Man on the moon, Liar Liar, and Castaway (the Oliver Reed one), Grease, Pretty Woman, Lemony Snickett.
Of animations, Cars is probably my favourite Pixar movie- I think that it should have won an Oscar. Dreamworks 'Antz' was great too, as was Shrek.
As far as violent films go, Pulp Fiction, Sin City and Goodfellas but some distasteful scenes of course.

1. Donnie Darko
This film was the first film that made me think deeply. It is a top-notch acting, interesting characters, and stylish action peand emotional drama. A wonderful film.
2. Saving Private Ryan / Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan
It was extremely emotional, and its action meant something. Another great film with excellent direction on the part of Spielberg, who continued his investigation of World War II, which started with Schindler's List.
Schindler's List
This was one of the first films to really go into the Holocaust with a gritty, realistic touch.Another great film.
3. Starship Troopers
This film defines the word entertainment.
4. The Silence of the Lambs
The story was gripping, the action was thrilling, but the acting really defines this movie.
5. Collateral
The movie is intense, but entertaining at the same time.

Almost Famous- love, love, love this movie. I've seen it about 30 times and still it is amazing.
Fellowship of the Ring
Rear Window
Schindler's List
(3-way tie, couldnt decide) My Fair Lady (I really felt like I needed a musical), Wizard of Oz, Big Fish, Jurassic Park (when Sam Neill sees that dinosaur for the first time, I still feel wonder.). oh and Mary Poppins. I guess that is a five way tie. I'd never really thought of this question before.

Catch 22, The Wall, I Married A Witch, Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust, and Brazil. Then comes Fight Club, Anatomy (the first one-the sequel sucked), Bell Book and Candle, and anything by Dario Argento.
