You don't necessary have to replace the software when going Vista, however there were some really significant changes to the wondows core so far I noticed - for example if you have anthing that is using the Outlook contacts data for your own software it will probably need modifications to work on Vista.

I would install Vista on one computer only and see if your custom software works before switching the whole company to it (ok this is smart*** a bit - but the only way to really know if your techie is overblowing the issue)

Otherwise I would say just stick with XP - the company I worked for in 2005 was still on Windows NT and Office 2000 for exactly the same reason (and it was a big company!)

I would trial the software on a test Vista machine. Vista comes with a compatibility mode for this sort of thing, but you really won't know until you have tried. Feel free to PM me if you need more info about running your software in compatibility mode.

Try installing your custom software on a Vista machine.

If it runs, fire him, if not pay for custom Vista compatible software re-write.
