It's due to the fact that infection released could travel to other parts of your body, like your brain or your heart.

If the infection is contained, controlled and cured insitu then the risk of spread to other vital organs is minimized.

Yes, a dentist will drain an abscess. My mom had a tooth abscess and even though the regular dentist couldn't take care of it she was sent to a dental specialist to get it taken care of. If your regular dentist won't do it pls get to a dental specialist to have this dealt with. Abscesses are very serious and if left untreated long enough could cause some serious complications and yes that includes death.

I saw a story about a man dying from an abscess in his tooth that he didn't have treated by a dentist on a program on Discovery Health.

It would be very painful to drain a tooth abcess. If you have infection, the pain medication does not work. That is why the dentist gives you medication to clear up an infection before he does any dental work. They normally give you pain meds along with the antibiotics. You should feel better in 24 hours or so. Then they will do whatever they need to do to repair your tooth.

According to my dentist it is because preforating the abscess risks spreading the infection. Though I must admit, when your in that kind of agony sometimes you don't care, lol.

Do you want all of that infected material to get into your blood stream; maybe go to your heart?? That's why they don't work on infected areas. You first have to take an antibiotic. Godloveya.
