Normally, I would say 99.9% of the time a product key is generated through an algorithm. You are given a exclusive pre-generated product key (on a label, a sticker etc) which is then checked against the algorithm when you type it in, so as such it is seldom to find a hard coded product key in the software itself. Hard coded keys used to be more common in the 80's and early 90's but this is probably obsolete now.

I remember using a hex editor etc to extract sometimes codes from games etc, but today you will need to look for/find a key generator on the dark side of the web written specifically to reverse engineer your product key for your specific software Google or Yahoo for keygen, crack, serial and your product name, you may be lucky. This is illegal however, and should not be used to not pay for your software. If you have lost the key of a legally purchased software you can try your supplier, but often this will not be helpful, especially if you have not registered the software.

per default this is not possible (and I think also not accordant with most terms of use of the software, as it would make the copy protection provided by the key useless)...

It is easier to extract the key from a already running installation (no clue if this breaks the terms of use...)
