It's quite simple really, not easy for one who doesn't know the bible, but it is a simple answer. You have to read and study all four books to understand that the first time they were sent out without money nor sustenance the Lord was here on earth praying for their success. He admonished them to go with the peace of a dove and the wisdom of a serpent.
Here in this part of the Christ's life here on earth you find Him in the Garden when He knows that in a short time He will be dead. When he told them that they should now carry a bag of money, and such in their travels He also supplied them with a means of defence. He said that two swords are enough. He did not say arm your self to the teeth boys. When the Christ told them that if they live by the sword then they will die by the sword it was after one of His disciples cut off the ear of some ignorant man who didn't even know that the Christ they were arresting is in fact the Son of God. The Christ himself healed the man, and again let the Apostles know that you can not live this way. Defending yourself is one thing but an outright assault is another thing altogether.
Remember self defence does not have to draw blood from your enemy. You can stop a sword with a sword, but not with your bare hands. These swords would have been used to defray pain and blood. Not draw blood, nor render pain, but to defray. Also ....in those days? A man would have been an idiot to go out into the wild without some sort of defence. The Christ knew this as well.

The first means that those who live a cruel or evil life willhave a worse fate than those who don't.
The second is when he is talking about the turmoil that will be in the last days, and it is a figure of speech, telling ppl
that things would get so bad, they would need weapons to protect themselves, continually.
The meaning of the parable is very simple to understand if you’ve read the scriptures they were taken from. Which it is obvious that you haven’t and are just randomly picking and choosing.
And for the dude that made the claim about Christians trying to justify the war...
(I am Catholic and am not a Bush supporter.) and how does the war have anything to do with this question? Maybe most of you answering should go back to second grade and learn how to spell before you ever decide to participate in anything like this again.

Matthew 26:52
"Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword".
That "sword" in the Word signifies truth combating against falsity, and falsity against truth, and therefore the dispersion of falsities, and also spiritual temptation, can be seen from very many passages, of which I will introduce here only a few by way of confirmation. Thus in Matthew:
Jesus said that He came not to send peace on earth, but a sword (Matt. 10:34). Here by "sword" is meant the combat of temptation. It was so said, because men at that time were in falsities, and the Lord uncovered interior truths, and only by combats from such truths can falsities be cast out
"He that hath no sword let him sell his garments and buy one" (Luke 22,36).
In Luke:
Jesus said to His disciples, Now he that hath a purse let him take it, likewise a wallet; and he that hath no sword let him sell his garments and buy one (Luke 22:35-38). By "purse" and "wallet" spiritual knowledges, thus truths, are signified; "garments" signify what is their own; and by "sword" combat is signified.

Sure glad you are thinking.
Jesus could neither read nor wright.
Everything he supposedly said was written by others and not just one.
what one believed was said at one time is not what another might believe at another.
Also all the writings in the bible were written long after the time it was to have happened.
Then there are all those translations over the years that surely have changed words here and there.
I do not understand how anyone can actually believe

If you'd allow me, Living by the sword is far different then defending ones self with one. For Christ said the first line after Christ healed the Roman Peter attacked. So in my point of view,as I am not Christian, is do not instigate, but when needed there's nothing wrong with a little self defense to ensure you and your attacker live.

He may have been speaking metaphorically. The bible is also said to be called a sword.

Live by the sword, die by the sword. Live by the gun, die by the gun. I guess you are much more likely to die from a gun shot if you fire guns at other people. Does it matter? We're all gonna die.
