Because it's accepted behaviour in their culture. On this very webb site there's alot of verbal abuse, cruelty and intolerance towards those of different faiths or those that ask questions showing different attitudes to the norm. Most of them are American kids brought up to believe this is appropriate and have not been taught otherwise. A failing of their society perhaps to uphold the principals it was founded on.

The real cause of the problems you highlighted is not religions, traditions or culture but "man under the control of sin". God created man for a good purpose but because of man's disobedience to God, sin entered man, and resulted in a spiritual death where man became separated from God. The effect of a life separated from God is the cause of all the problems you cited (murder, rape, theft, greed, etc). The answer to the problem is to restore your relationship with God and that's is through the saving grace of Jesus.
