I am going to travel to New York over the summer and I must be there at a certain time, and if there happen to be a delay with the airplane, how long will I have to wait at the most, or is the time unpredictable?

I agree that you should be there the day before if it is absolutely imperative that you make your appointment. Saying that delays only last 2 hours at most is not true. I have been delayed for 5 hours before waiting to get into JFK due to the weather in the NYC area. Delays into New York are common so leave yourself plenty of time. There is so much air traffic coming in there and very little airspace. Throw in one thunderstorm and things really get backed up quickly. It doesn't even have to be bad weather at your arrival airport for it to affect you. If planes are deviating around the weather, it is going to slow down all of the flights into the NYC area.

My advice, go the day prior.

Before you go to the airport their should be a certain number that you could call or go on the airlines website and type your flight information in and they will tell you weather your flight is going to be departing on time, changes to the flight departure time and information if your flight is going to be delayed or not. Most of the time its just a technical if the flight does become delayed sometimes it could be 2 hours - 1 day. But if it is longer the airline will offer you vouchers for free food, refreshments and sometime offer to get you hotel room on them for the night because of the delay.

How important is it for you to be there at that exact time? Travel the day before if it is absolutely necessary, but for the most part delays don't last longer than 2 hours. As long as the weather is good you should have no reason to worry about delays.

it's unpredictable. let's say you need to be there on monday, so you decide to book one day earlier and get there sunday. come sunday, there's a storm and your flight is canceled. by then, the monday flights are full and you can't get on until tuesday. you would have been better off booking for monday.
i agree with giving yourself more time, but just remember it's still unpredictable.

9 hours earlier flight from Dublin to Lake Garda by way of cabin affliction? Ya wa? We had no longer left the airport . We have been given 5 pounds to spend in the airport for the 9 hours. They cound no longer make up there ideas no remember if it exchange into cabin affliction or a number of different issues . It exchange into fairly flippant. 2d time at the back of schedule on BMI flight on an identical time as on board. We in no way have been given off floor because of the fact they have been having a topic with between the get away shoots. They cound't restoration it or replace it so as that they offloaded a % of the passengers. Took 3 hours. neglected my connecting flight as a effect. had to thoroughly exchange my commute plans regarding 3 ladies by myself at nighttime on a dingy prepare by Italy.(We neglected the final Eurostar i think of) and in no way recieved a cent reimbursement for any of it. Connecting flights have continuously been a nightmare. I hate airports i think of you're handled like crap

Tip to an obviously-new flyer... if you REALLY need to be there at a certain time, arrive the day before.

You can't predict delays.
