My puppy (four monthes) just had surgery done for her eye. She has prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid, or cherry eye. It's when the third eyelid pops out. Anyways, I paid a little over 500$ for the surgery and her getting spaded. They said if we didn't do the surgeries together, the cherry eye alone would have costed over 600$. Anyways, the cherry eye surgury is just tucking the eyelid back down, and stitching it down. They put a cone on her neck and such for scratching. So we've had her back for three days, and last night her stitches came out, and her eye is WORSE. It doesn't seem like it hurts her, but it looks like it effects her vision. I'm taking her back tomorrow, just to see if they'd do the surgery for free or something. I'm only 15 and I take full responcibility for my puppy, and all her expencesses (sp). Should they do the surgury for free? Before they came out, it was obvious something was wrong with the eye, it was droopy, like if you were to pull it down.

Most vets would repair it for free and charge only for any ointment or medicine they send home..After care is usually included in the cost of surgery.

No dog is ever free. Not only will you have to pay for medications and possibly surgery for the cherry eye, you'll have to buy supplies (about $200) and regular vet care ($200) in the first few days. Then you'll have recurring fees to think about - plus, if this dog was poorly bred probably MORE vet fees later on in life due to poor breeding! I would seriously re-consider taking this dog unless you have the funds to pay for it NOW and later on in life. I agree that you should get a vet opinion/estimate before agreeing to take the pup - also have the vet give a regular check up if you can, the pup MAY have other problems the woman isn't telling you about.

hey! My aunt is a vet and owns her own vet clinic! I would say that if the dog hasn't scratched that you should take her back to the vet and explain the situation. However there are ways for dogs to scratch or rub their eye on other things besides their paws that could have made it worse. If her stitches came out you need to take her back to have them re-stitched leaving them out can leave her prone to infection which is good that you are taking her back. They probably won't have to do another surgery, but will have to sedate her to redo the stitches. Regarding the droopyness of the eye, my dog had an entropian which is extra skin on the eye that is removed. After she had the extra skin removed and the stitches in it was droopy for a few months and still is a little bit, that's just part of the surgery. I hope you get everything figured out! Good luck!

Yes your vet should definitely fix her eye for free. The stitches should NOT have come out after just 3 days.

You sound like a great pet owner. I don't know many (if any) 15 year olds who would be willing to pay $500 on their dog. Also, good job on deciding to get her spayed!

I hope all goes well. I would definitely arrange something with your vet because unless you took the cone off her, it wasn't your fault that the stitches came out.

My personal opinion is YES the second surgery should be totally free! It's been less than a week, the stitches came out on thier own and has caused the problem to be possibly worse than when it was first diagnosed and dealt with.

I think your vet will do it the second time with out charge.. if not... then 1.. get a new vet... 2 report this one to the local ASPCA and the veterinary medical board.

Good luck.. I hope it all turns out great!

You shouldnt return "just to see if they'd do the surgery for free or something." That comes across as if you're out looking for freebies. You want to sound like a concerned parent by returning to have her surgery sites rechecked.
Any surgery can have complications, and this one is no exception.
There are some small clinics that cannot afford to give away services. They have bills to pay too.

If she wore the cone all the time, then I see it as the vets responsibility, he didn't do something properly. Negligence can happen in any field of medicine and this might be your problem. Getting them to do anything about it without charge might be a problem but I would really push for that. I'm having a problem with my puppy and I feel it was negligence, when I left the vets office I didn't feel the proper care had been given.

Good luck.

If the stitches have come our prematurely, there must be a reason for that to happen. Either the vet didnt end the stitches properly (in which case I feel they should bear any further cost of surgery) of your puppy managed to rub her face against something and wrecked the stitches herself (in which case I feel you should bear any further cost).

The surgery which she has already had carried out shouldnt be free, its your responsibility.

Good luck with your pup, I hope everything goes ok!

By the way it's spayed, not spaded :-)

Do you mean the stitches came out on their own, before they were supposed to? If this is the case then yes, they probably should re-do it for free.

Talk to your vet about what is actually going on there tho - for one thing it might be difficult getting free surgery out of them!

I would say yes, your vet should fix it. If you followed any directions given after surgery, kept the cone in place for the specified time, then absolutely yes -- it should be free.
