when I try to write the file using nero, it givs a message "MPEG-4 demo expired" and wants me upgrade to anew version of Nero..
is there any other software that can wrie a avi file to a vcd which is viewable in a vcd player!!!

I recommend Nero http://www.nero.com/enu/index.html It has a free trial. It works like a charm.

Encode AVI to VCD compliant MPEG-1 (use TMPGEnc)
Author the MPEG1 to VCD standard (use VCDEasy)

WinAVI can do all the work whether its wmv to vob or vob to wmv or even AVI to MPEG which is also VCD
