My sister's name is Emilia but she's almost 80.
Its origin is from the Roman family name Aemilius, which was derived from Latin 'aemulus' meaning "rival".
It's an old fashion name, not so common among young Italians. However I feel it's still a nice name and I wouldn't be surprised by it be again "fashion" in a few years. It has happened already with other names that had been discontinued and today again very used.

It is a female personal name (not a family name)
It is not rare, but a little uncommon.
It sounds not so modern (my personal opinion).

And, as Emilia is also an Italian Region, it can draw a little amount of mockery

Emilia is a nice name. Emma could be a varation of that name. The most important thing is that you and your husband like the name.
