Just because you join doesn't mean that you will get sent overseas. If you are single and have no kids, then I would recommend it. It isn't easy, but they give you money to go to college. You have a guaranteed paycheck twice a month, good health benefits. You need to well take into consideration the risks and the benefits. If you do decide to do it, dont be stupid with your money. Dont live beyond your means. As far as marine corps requiring no intelligence, I think not. You do have tests and everything that you have to take. I think you should really think about it, but it does seem like a good option for you. You have to be able to put up with a lot of crap though. You can't be going around and beating people up and what not just cuz you get mad at them. If you expect to do good at it, you gotta be able to keep your nose clean.

I think you should join since you do have some interest. But, it's more than just a job. Once you get into recruit training, you will think you made a huge mistake as soon as they buzz all your hair off. Then some guy or woman will be an inch from your face screaming at you, calling you a "scumbag". You had better go in being in some shape because you will run your backside off everywhere you go. Plus you will enjoy the 10-mile hikes. In the same token, you'll come out a better and stronger person. How much money you'll be able to save will be up to you. If you have a large tatoo that shows up on you, they won't take you. Otherwise, have fun, and be the best you can be.

First check with your recruiter to make sure it is ok. Then if he says your good, think about it for a little bit before making the plunge into the Corps. I'll tell you what though, it's an experience you'll never get doing anything else!! Also think about what you want to do if you do go in to the Marines, as far as job wise goes. Don't even worry if you don't know how to do anything in the field right now, they will teach you everything you need to know. Right now, every branch of service is shoving money down peoples throats just to get them to join, so no matter what, you should get a signing bonus joining what ever branch that excepts you. What ever you do though....Don't go Open Contract!!! Make sure you find a job field you want and its on your Contract.
Good luck with what ever decision you make!

It depends if you want to go to Iraq or not. They will send you there, even if they say they won't. You will be deployed where the military is most needed and that is the current hotspot. Maybe a less extreme option could be possible? Have you ever heard of the Americorp? You can work for them for a year, be paid a stipend, and a lil bit of money for college. Or maybe the Peacecorp? Scholarships and loans is always an option to pay for college. Your still young, go to college first. It is an honor to serve your country, regardless of how you do it, and that don't necessarily mean joining the military.

If you can stay out of trouble while in the military, and you think it will help you get your life in line, then go for it. Just don't spend all of your money on stupid things like a motorcycle or car that you can't afford, even though it's 0 money down, and a super low APR.
If you sign up, don't whine like that one guy from Hawaii did. You are government property from the day you sign up, 'til the day you are discharged, honorably or dishonorably.
And I have to ask it too, do you want to go to Iraq? Maybe you should try a different Branch of the Military? Army? Navy? Airforce?

Are you kidding me? With all the educational opportunities this country places at your feet you decide to go and place you life in danger? You want to come back without arms?
Leave the military to the fools, my friend, be smart do you want to be paid peanuts or do you want to live a comfortable life? Enroll yourself in a community college, do your required courses, transfer to a 4 year university, there are endless opportunities if you have the right education. But if you want to join the Military, sure you'll have a skill set, but, buddy, think about it a graduate from a respectable four year university will have leverage over you!
If you want to do hard labor, back breaking work for the rest of your life go ahead enlist, but if you want to become a lawyer, doctor, etc ENROLL yourself in a community college ASAP.
Leave the military to the academically impaired and the foolish.
But then again you are a great candidate for the military.
Hopeless
Undereducated
Foolish
No sense of self-worth
Irresponsible

I would say no, as my son asked me the same question.
My feeling is we are heading for really tough times ahead, if you are in the military you will have to see combat.
We do need people who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, but I think we are in a unwinable war.
You cannot fight with one hand behind your back.
My answer is things will get better and they have ways to get shcooling paid for. Figure out what you like to do and dont worry about money, money will come if you are doing what your passion is.
Most important thing is have a goal and work hard everyday to achieve it. Dont be discouraged and dont look back always press forward.
Best of luck to you, you will make it!!!!!!!

A problem is why you owe 5K in the first place. Unpaid fines will likely be a problem, and chances are if it's several offenses, the Marines may not even take you. If that's the case, try the Army. They'll take damn near anyone with a pulse.

Go for it Sparky. Just a point or two.... You don't get a scholarship....you get the GI Bill and some tuition assistance. Also, don't just a degree...that is if you me a college degree. You will have to earn that by going to college and graduating...just like in the civilian. But the GI Bill and tuition will help you pay for it.
Good luck.

depends on the person. marine corps was good for me. not easy, but fulfilling. still it's a heck of a time to join the military as things are soon to be changing much.
you will need to go around and get 3-5 signed references since you have a record. these should be good references. school principles and counselers are great references.
good luck.
