Normally when I have panic attacks I can feel them coming. I know what helps me get through them and so if I feel an attack coming I do what I can to stop it or at least calm myself so that it isn't as bad. But every once in a while I have a panic attack that I just can't stop and I can't even do anything to make it easier, nothing seems to make it easier. I don't want medication because I don't have panic attacks that are bad very often.

If you experiece panic attacks what do you do to make yourself feel better? Can you feel your attacks coming and are you able to control your attacks as well?

Thank you

okay, even though it seems very cliche, i breathe in and out of a paper bag. the excess carbon dioxide in the bag lowers your heart rate. just whenever you feel one coming, whip out the paper bag.

Figure out what your 'trigger' is and then work on dealing with it, but avoidance just makes it worse unless it's something like a food trigger right? Ha. Anyways, I just had an anxiety attack yesturday. I was out at the grocery store and it was too hot and noisy and there were way too many people around and I already wasn't feeling well because I had a pretty bad hang over well, I don't go out alone, so I grabbed my partners hand and we went home after doing what we went out to do, like I said avoidance just makes it worse. I started hyperventilating as soon as I got in the door. I knew it was anxiety, but knowing it's anxiety doesn't stop it! Anyways, I just drank some water ranted about why I was having anxiety and realised I was dizzy and sick feeling because of my hang over. Then I went on with my day. The water and the ranting really helped.

Ofcourse, I don't know how bad your anxiety attacks are. Mine aren't nearly as bad as they used to be. I've worked on not being anxious about anxiety. That's what you need to do. A little anxiety attack never hurt anyone. It's the way we deal with it that hurts.

I'm not always able to feel an anxiety attack coming on, and like you it doesn't happen often. I just would tell myself I know what this is and I know it'll pass and just go somewhere soft and let yourself just experience it, just try and breath in and out slowly, don't get freaked out, they don't last that long. Just tell yourself whats the worst that can happen in a panick attack you'll pass out, So what? I used to breath in a paper bag, count to 10 slowly, and all kinds of other things but now I just let it happen and feel it, so I'll know there's nothing to be scared of.
GOOD LUCK!
I know it can be scary.

i suffered panic attacks for years and mine were extremely horrible and lasted sometimes for hours off and on. i also dont like to take medication but the nurse at my doctors office told me that if you cant get one stopped and it is really bad to place a tablet of xanax a prescription your doctor will give you under your tongue it absorbs in the body in less than 5 minutes and you should get instant relief. i tried this and it does work and you know what just having the medication around makes me feel safer and i have been panic attack free for almost 8 years now. try it if your doctor thinks xanax is ok for you. they make it in low strengh to high strengh. the .5mg worked for me . good luck

YES I do that too..... First, get up & walk away from the area you are in. Then I always have to take deep breaths in through my nose very, very deep till I feel my diaphragm fully expanded. Hold it 5 seconds and purse my lips and blow it out. Thats the only thing that helps me! It's the fastest way to get oxygen to the brain. I learned it in a stress relief class through my job. I have to do it 5 to 10 times. While reasoning with myself "IT'S NOT WORTH THIS, IT WON'T EVEN MATTER TOMORROW!!!" I do take Lorzepam when it's just to much, it's not addicting and is very mild. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one!!
