This isn't that rare, especially for females, and those on the autistic spectrum.

Most commonly this is due to a higher sensitivity to flicker than other people. The effect can be almost subliminal and yet profoundly disturbing, while others who do not have the sensitivity can see and feel nothing amiss.

If it is flicker it should not apply to the new high-efficiency tungsten filament replacing bulbs, just the traditional tubular fluorescents.

Electronic (rather than electromagnetic) installations (ballasts) for fluorescents operate at twice the frequency and usualy eliminate this problem, and also the hum that some can hear. But it means changing whole installations, not just changing the type of tube.

hello,
I experience this also. Fluorescent lighting is the worst, but also direct sunlight, and some other light bulbs. I have light blue eyes which my optometrist says react super-quickly to light. I can't stand it either. At night church they dim the overhead lights just for me [isn't that nice?] because I would get a migraine and go home. I have a lupus like condition called mixed connective tissue disorder which may morph into full lupus one day. Please go to an eye doctor, not just an eye-glass specialist. Go to an ophthamologist, not optometrist.

Get a non fluorescent lamp and see if that helps. The blending of the light provides a better environment.

If that doesn't help, see a physician since the fluorescent can affect your nervous system.

Tiki torches will generally alleviate this. Iranian power Hz is 400 compared to 60 in the US. People growing up with the higher freq can sense this subliminally. Are you Iranian? I hear wookies have the same problem. How hairy are you?

Have you been diagnosed with lupus? This disease (which I have) predisposes the patient to difficulty with fluorescent lighting.
