what is SAE 40/20?can any one tell the composition and why and where it is used..

SAE= society of automotive engineers....40/20 oil is variable viscosity oil colder oil is thinner, hotter it gets thicker..i think this was developed by the texaco co by request from the u.s. war dept for military use between temperature extremes on the planet. especially aircraft and armoured vehicles. this need came from WW2 and the Korean conflict.
