I know there are a few companies like Bunac that sponsor people and will get you a working holiday visa for four months in Australia. Is it possible to apply directly or do you need to pay a company?

Amazingly enough it had already occured to me to go to the australian immigration web site. I couldn't find the information there.
As it turns out you do need to pay a company to sponsor you in order to get a working holiday visa for Australia. Bunac it is.

I believe Americans can now take partt in our working holiday visa program. Dont play any company to do it you should be able to do it yourself. www.immi.gov.au

Working holiday visas last for a year and are available through travel agents - they are usually free, you just need to fill out a form. If it gets rejected, then try again. (the Australian bureau have to refuse some for figures, may not be personal issues!) Bon voyage!
