Fact is based on that which has been proven to us. For most people, that means actual evidence that is clearly seen, felt, heard, touched, tasted.
Faith is extending confidence when there is no physical proof that your confidence is justified. However, while faith is different from fact, having faith does not mean that what you are believing in is not a fact and that there is no proof for what you are believing in- it's just not openly evident.
Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen.

Did you ever consider that all education is a matter of faith/belief? In kindergarten you are told that 1+1=2 and so you believe what your teacher tells you and it becomes fact to you.
What about making a half circle and a straight line next to it and calling it the letter "a"? Again, you believed that this thing makes the sound of "a".
You believe the chair you sit on will hold your weight, or else you wouldn't sit on it.
If you have entered into a personal relationship with God and His Holy Spirit lives in your life, it has become a fact to you, even if other people don't believe the same thing.

Fact is that which you know by your own experience. Faith is that which you know through your intellect. This is the problem in the battle between the believer and non-believer. Both approach it from faith and not from experience. If the Fundamentalist would stop trying to convince the non-believer thought intellect and reason, the non-believer would be free to just follow the inner calling to have the experience. But no one ever listens to me. And I am always right too... and that is a fact.

Truth comes from within and not necessarily from without. A fact is something that accordingly does not fall away. For example, there is something in buddhism called the law of (inner) intention. You may either choose to adhere to it or ignore it. Faith is knowing that you have this ability to distinguish between what does and does not fall away. (put another way, that which is unknowable becuase it is not supported by inner truth). So yes, they are quite different.
Story: A chinese king once assigned a monk to be his personal advisor. When the monk was called into the palace before a court of elders, the king asked: "I have built many grand temples, feed the poor, and opened up new centers of learning. How much karma have I erased?"
The monk could only answer "None, That which creates does neither harm nor good" The council gasped. Pure silence ensued before the king torted back "Who are you to talk to me that way?"
The monk replied "I do not know."
