one buddy who was clearly drunk. He blew into the breathalizer and the reading came up Ho5. The warning light was blinking really fast, but other than that we were wondering exactly what the Ho5 reading might mean.
We joked that it meant "go straight to rehab", but it might not be too far from truth with this guy...Anybody out there NO JOKING, know what that means? No guesses please.

The reason I dont READ the instruction manual is because AS I WROTE it is my buddy's breathalizer...NOT mine. I am being NOSEY about my other buddy's possible alcohol problem and do not wish to bug the owner of the product with this question.
Thanks for the well thought out answer and you are welcome for the 2 points you didn't earn.

Oh, one more detail. We tested him 4 times over a 20 minute period and it kept doing the same thing.

It is nice you are concerned about your friend. I am slightly familiar with this testing device but this is going to have to involve some slight guessing here.
The unit will flash 'HOT" not HO5 when it receives mouth alcohol in it or the reading was .40 or higher. What I mean by receives mouth alcohol is that he had some liquid residue still in his mouth and sent it directly in the machine which causes the HOT indicator to go off. I see you tested him over and over but was he still drinking in between tests? That would do it or as disgusting as this may sound if he slightly regurgitates some alcohol back up or burps right before the test it would cause that as well.
The other choice is a reading of .40 or higher. Let me tell you that is a very high level that could cause a coma, heart failure and death in some people, but I have seen it before with hard core alcoholics. Keep in mind that machine is not 100 percent accurate as well but gets pretty close. I believe this guy may have done something to the sensors and sent some liquid into the device causing this. Hope it helps and always take care of your friends.

Sharper Image Breathalyzer

I'm not guessing, I'm just trying to help. Read the owners manual. All codes should be listed. If you can not find it, it could be a re-set, or error code. You can always call the toll free number on the manual, or contact Sharper Image. These devices are only accurate to a certain degree. Keep this in mind. One of the violations is Driving Under the Influence. Just because the breathalyzer says you're good to go, that doesn't mean that you're not impaired. Don't rely on that piece of equipment to keep you out of jail.

Every model of civilian breathalyzer is different as far as the way they put out readings. Ours have the BAC level in numeric form so it's pretty easy. Might talk to the owner of the device found out what brand and model it is. If you dont want him to know the reason say you want to get one for yourself then look it up on the internet and see if it has a classification for all readings online

Why don't you READ the Instruction Booklet that came packaged with it?
