Let's see, what details have you NOT provided?

O/S -- no idea
Platform -- no idea
Compatible SQL Server types -- no idea
Is your machine compatible -- no idea
Do you even know any SQL -- likely not
Who's going to manage the database -- not you, it seems

I am afraid my answer is going to be "no idea" as well, as you left me nothing to work on.

Which sql server? A Microsoft SQL server, just load the CD and let it autorun. Then you'll need to configure the thing to actually allow you to use localhost as a valid address. You can't run SQL easily on Windows XP Home. XP Home does not have IIS installed and you can't download it either.

A MySql application, you'll need to load an Apache or other server first, then load MySql and in the server config you tell it where the MySql installation is.

Or

You go to sourceforge.net and download any of the Windows based WAMP packages that will load the Apache, php and MySql applications for you and let you run a small server setup with the click of a button.

Ummm... double click on the setup??

If you would like to take a short cut, just insert the CD. The setup launches automatically!
