I ship out in 2 weeks and my recruiter said that all that stuff about yelling is all in the movies, and it isnt really allowed anymore. Also, I was told I that they NEVER send people to Iraq right after training.

You got to be kidding!!!! If you are worried about someone yelling at you and hurting your feelings--you need to join the British Marines/Navy!! You can see how well they are trained! It is better to get yelled at until you get it straight than to get shot or even worse, show your yellow streak like they did.

First of all thank you for serving our country, my fiance is in Iraq right now. But recruiters lie, that's what they feel they have to do to get you to sign the piece of paper. The truth is you will probably get sent to Iraq or Afgahnistan right away after all of your training. And the drill instructors aren't there to be your best friends and to make things as pleasant as possible. Basic training is hard and it sucks, but the Army has developed a nicer, gentler approach over the years. But there will be some yelling and there will be very unpleasant moments when you want to quit, that's just life. I know in the Marine Corps there's still plenty of yelling and IT (incentive training). The purpose of basic training is to get you to follow an order and not think twice and the DI's will do what is necessary to achieve that. It's their job to train you so you don't do something stupid and come home in a body bag and they take that responsibility seriously. Their job is to take who you are and make you what they want you to be. Every family member and friend that I've had go into the military has come back a changed person after Basic. It's nothing to fear, but just don't expect it to be all nice and friendly.

your recruiter flat out lied to you. of course they yell at you in basic training. they do not hit you or anything like that but they definately yell at you. they have to. part of basic training is the drill sgts breaking you down and then building you back up, they cannot break you down by being polite and nice to you. expect to be yelled at A LOT, even when you dont do anything wrong, you get yelled at for other people messing up. and as for never being sent to iraq right after training, HA, yes you do. i was sent to iraq 2 months after i graduated AIT. It is not guaranteed that you will automatically ship to Iraq, it all depends on the unit you go to, but your chances are VERY high that you will deploy to iraq sometime or another. recruiters lie dont believe a word they say

Well your recruiter is right. The Army has just pussified its boot camp not too long ago. So instead of getting yelled at you'll get a stern voice instead. Yea, I actually think Air Force boot camp is harder now.

and before you get shipped to Iraq you need to go to your MOS school. So no you won't be going RIGHT after your basic training but you will be going for sure.

Ouch, he flat out lied. Recruiters like him give the Army a bad name. Before you go to basic, you should talk to someone else in his office... demand that you want to talk to someone higher up in his chain of command. Explain to them everyting he told you. It won't get you out of your contract but it will get him in some hot water.

Yes, the Drill Sergeants yell. They make you do pushups, situps and all other kinds of "corrective training". But they aren't there to destroy you. What do push-ups do? They make you stronger. What does yelling do? It makes you braver. And the feeling you get when you graduate basic and get to shake your drill Sergeants' hands - Priceless.
That still does not amount to the feeling you will get when you are in uniform and you know that you are doing a job that 98% of the country don't have the guts, the strength, or unfortunately, the health to do.

Good luck!!!! Every person in the Army has been where you are going, and has survived.

I got yelled at the whole way through. Well I did make a few mistakes like going into the wrong formation, forgetting my left from my right, and wearing black socks with my Pts'. It isn't bad as the TV shows or Full Metal jacket. As long as you say yes Drill Sergeant and No Drill Sergeant, you will be fine.

All I can talk about is Navy boot camp more years ago then I want to remember. But they will yell at you. Less if you keep to the straight and narrow. The main thing to remember about boot camp, and I am sure it is as true now as when I was in, is it is all about trying to make you crack, it's a head trip. If you can't take it they don't want you. There is nothing personal about it at all.

Better bring along plenty of cotton for your ears. Going overseas directly after finishing training is highly unlikely. You won't even know how to load and fire your weapon at that time. They will undoubtedly give you plenty of seasoning first before sending you over. Learn your lessons well. Take your assignments seriously. This is not a kid's game you will be playing. Have fun during your off hours but do not drink too much. Get to know your weapon inside out and upside down. It is your way home.

They will yell when they need to. They cannot insult you personally or physically harm you, but regular yelling when nobody is paying attention or following orders will be part of your day everyday you are there. AND never listen to anyone that tell you something will NEVER happen in the military. ANYTHING can happen. I would guess they would send you to school first before deploying you.

They have changed it alot basic I mean, yeah they are going to yell at you, and they are going to make you cry.. That is there job they want to break you down and rebuild you.. The Army has went south alot with basic because people "couldnt had it".. It was stressing them out to be yelled at, but that is part of the Army, you are going to get yelled at alot, and yes you can go to Iraq, as soon as you get to your post you are going to they are going to impresses you for about 5 days (i think).. Then they are going to send you to your unit.. Once you get to that unit if they are leaving, you are leaving, if they have not been gone long you are going to fly and be with them.. You will be apart of them and when you are apart of them you do what they do..

My husband had 3 pvt's get to Iraq 2 months after he got there, they had just came out of basic and AIT..

I dont know if it is to late now or not, but when my brother joined he signed up for hometown recruiting, that is where when you get done with AIT, you get to go back home for 2 weeks and be with the recruiter.. It gave him 2 free weeks leave basically, in case he was leaving as soon as he got to his unit..

And good luck in the Army... keep your chin up

haha, who the hell told you that, i've been in almost 3 years, and my unit leaves to Iraq in a month, we just got some guys that came out of AIT, like a week ago, and they're not special, they're coming with us, as for the yelling and stuff, when I came in, drill sergeants didn't care, your *** got caped for **** you didn't do, so umm get prepared, oh and it's not boot camp, it's basic training, so what if you get yelled at, you'll get over it. Hooahhhh!!!!!!!!!!!
