It is sad to see all of this. I think about when I was theri age and how I cared about playing with friends hanging out, etc . I didnt concern myself with weight until I was older. Now Id rather be fat and happy than thin and miserable thinking about food all of the time.

I don't know, I think people probably always cared about body image, we just hear about it more these days due to the level of communcation we can now engage in. In all times there have been standards of beauty in all cultures, so I don't think it's unique to our times.
What is unique, especially in the US, is the high level of obesity and sedentary lifestyles.these days. For instance, when I was a kid, not terribly longer ago than the kids these days, I spent a LOT more time outdoors playing and being active, whether it's sports, outdoor activities, or whatever. Nowadays, with the wide variety of computer and console games, cheap junk food and soft drinks, and 600 channels on TV, kids just aren't as interested in being active. At least, not as much as a whole as it used to be.
Way too much emphasis is put on how we look rather than how healthy and fit we are. This drives many people, especially young girls but guys also, to unhealthy and even hazardous extremes in order to try and fit the so-called "ideal". I just hope education and better support and involvement from adults comes into play at some point.

Yes it is sad, and one of the reasons they do it is because they want guys to like them. Some guys don't even care about the weight. I mean if it is a lot they probably would, but a few pounds more isn't so bad and besides all that matters is if you like the person inside not the outside. I think that's what girls should worry more about.

Yes I have noticed and its ALMOST as annoying as the singles & dating catagory where the overwhelming number of 12-16 year old girls are asking....
um....there's this guy....and um....he like looked at me....and like....do you think he.....likes me?
I figure some of these girls might actually be worried and think they're fat, but trust me the majority just want to hear people say...."no! You're not fat".
Either way though, it does all come down to people worrying about what other people think, which indeed is sad.

Yes I agree with you. With anorexia and bulimia being such big problems with young girls, I really would hesitate on give away kind of advice that could be harmful. Maybe suggesting that they talk to their doctor before taking any action!

I've noticed and experienced.
It's the excessive pressure from the media that is frequently giving false impressions of an idealistic female body shape. We are thus retrieving body imaging issues and thinking that we must shape our bodies perfectly in order to live a happy life. It's getting to me also.
But I'm very pleased upon discovery of this board (today!) of all the positive answers other people are giving to those girls - you are not fat, you are of perfectly healthy BMI, what-are-you-talking-about-you-are-skinny, you don't have to worry about it, you are fine, your friend/mother/relative/associate is wrong. They need support and not insult upon their annoyance.

As long as society idolizes anorexic chicks wearing little more than a smirk, girls don't have a chance to feel good about themselves. Paris, Lindsay, or Britney on a panty-less drunk really aren't very good "role models".

yep...it's pretty sad. the value system in our once strong country is now a joke. seems like the kids are getting dumber by the second and all they care about is how much they weigh or what they look like. these are sad, sad, times.....
