My basset is 3 years old and I have been working with her since puppyhood. She is very obedient but just always seems to mess up at competitions. Her biggest problems are the nose (of course) and a short attention span. Has anyone else successfully trialled a Basset? What hints and tips can you give?

Many match shows (with food), tons of praise between exercises, the patience of Job. Try some rally where you can talk to the dog in the ring constantly at a real show. Keep your heeling pace fairly brisk so he has less time to think of other things. I actually made progress with one dog by going to a couple of shows and sitting ringside without actually competing, another friend put a CD on a rather hyperactive and very distractable dog by going to each show at the opening of the show grounds and walking all over the grounds for 2 hours before showing! Many obedience experts (Gains qualifiers) prefer showing a hound at indoor shows only. Try to advoid getting too stressed yourself, one friend had a dog do 100x better after SHE took a tranqulizer.

I was in a show in Chattanooga Tn. and this guy showed a basset hound and got 5th place. So it can be done. I took 1st and made a point to go over and tell him how impressed I was with his dog. My tips would be not to work the dog at home, take him somewhere else where their is a lot of distractions. I would work my dog a lot in Wal-mart parking lot. Basset's are a lot smarter than people give them credit for. They are just lazy and easily distracted.

My male Basset is 2 and I am interested in following up on your answer! They sure do have short attention spans, I wonder if there is a way to impare their scenting! It is frustrating, but of course that is what they were bred for. I'd suggest a Basset training page here online, try Google

ROFL
I have Beagles, so believe me I do feel your pain.
You may never get that pass, but you will be entertained along the way.
