This is common in older people but is still not normal. There are many causes for confusion and forgetfulness (see the sources), and her doctor should try to figure out what is going on instead of assuming that it is Alzheimer's. It could be something treatable like a urinary tract infection; it could also be something like the effects of a stroke, where the doctor could then take actions to prevent another stroke. If the blindness is new, it could be related to that. If she is not in a position to discuss these things with her doctor, then it is time for a family member to tell the doctor what is going on. I hope you are able to get an answer, and I hope she gets better.

This is very typical, she is very lucky to have someone like you that cares. As things progress, and they will because this the cycle of life, it can become very hard on the caregiver. Both physical and emotional. If you think it will make you feel better, and knowledge always does, you might consider dropping by your local Hospice office and talk to a nurse about the likely scenarios as time goes on. They are very kind there and someone will surely give you the time. Good luck, but it will be what it will be.
