I tried putting Ubuntu Linux on it, but it didn't work, and some people said that it needs at least 128 or 192 mb or RAM because I was having a black screen come up on installation. What are my other options (thinking about getting more RAM though).?

Oh yo..... Let me have this one yaw. I am doing the same thing... I 've been test driving a few Linux versions, Can I holla a sec?

Here's the ones I've done....

DSL 2.3 = Damn Small Linux was given to me by a JMU Professor at the shop... Says check it out, if you like Debian, you'll love this. He was right... They have a windws version that runs IN windows so you can preview it.. They have a LIVE CD version that will run your PC even if you have no hard drive. LOL no doubt...right... Now let's say you dig the Live CD and you got yourself a little rinky dink hard drive. The DSL Live cd will hook it up... Boom Hard Drive install baby.
Oh and drivers, you probably wont need em.

DSL Comes in some new flavors DSL 3 is out... And DSL has a "Bigger Brother" called DSL-N. Now Damn Small Link means that it's so small that you can install it to a usb stick. It will fit on a business card CD. Dude, you can carry around an OS in your wallet. Talk about being the man.... If you're a tech, you can boot any PC anywhere anytime and hop online, Burn CD's, Play MP3's, Watch DVD's. For real. And it's free? http:www/damnsmalllinux.org

Debian Linux. Yet another free OS that offers all you can eat on it's impressive 14 CD ISO library. On the initial install, I have Open Office, a completely compatible MS Office suite. I have Firefox (Mozilla) which as you know, got it's start in Linux, I have a ton of games. I get full Multimedia support. I gotta fight with my wireless in the beginning but if that's my only hold up, I'm down.... Here's the kicker, IMMUNE TO VIRUSES (so far). http://www.debian.org

All of these operating systems are based on technology (open source) that has decades of technology and development in every major country. This OS is not a gamer's OS although there are games out there for it, it is a general purpose Operating System.

Now keep in mind that as with any different Operating System, the control, handling, feel, and administration is different and so you want to allow yourself time to get aquainted with the software. Just like you did with Windows.

I currently use Debian 4 on my Compaq Presario 2700 Laptop and I am so pleased becuase I am still able to access my Windows network pc's. And since I use TightVNC to remotely control some PC's, Linux works out great becuase DSL has it embedded and Debian has it on their ISO cd's.

I gotta tell you, if you want free, try the Live CD's or the Windows Embedded DSL and give it a test drive. You can run a LiveCD on your Windows machine (Booting from it) and it won't effect your current Windows setup.

I hope this helps you. And to all the people that suggest Linux, I'm on my way to click yaw a thumbs up.

Damn Small Linux (DSL), Slackware, STX, Puppy Linux & Vector Linux should all work for you.
If you really like Ubuntu you may also want to look at Xubuntu, Ubuntu Lite & Fluxbuntu, all 3 are designed for use on older systems.

you may attempt gOS - those are meant to run on extremely transportable machines with low specs like that (the older distro regrettably) - small and easy, regardless of the undeniable fact that it is not stripped down made just to edit text cloth actually. the latest version, in accordance to wikipedia, needs approximately 384mb of RAM to run easily. yet i think you may run it... gOS is oriented around internet - so it emphasises on Google apps - and you're probable no longer gonna do lots with specs like that besides. you would be able to desire to purpose provide Ubuntu a shot, in any different case that Linux distro engaged on the Eee pc (regardless of the undeniable fact that I doubt it rather is accessible publicly). there is numerous subdistros of Ubuntu inclusive of Xubuntu and save an eye fixed on the up coming ubuntu cellular.

Dynebolic Linux may work, but a blank screen may simply mean that an incompatible video driver is being loaded.

Try

Get more RAM. It should be inexpensive for that laptop. I recommend Knoppix as a Linux Distro.

Try VectorLinux. There's a fair chance that it'll work though can't guarantee it.
