My choice would be the Onkyo TX-SR504 and a pair of BIC Acoustech HT-75 floorstanding loudspeakers. I think your dad will appreciate the system's great sound, good looks, and great quality -perhaps the best value under $500.

I think receivers are the weakest link in the Sony product lineup. Also, I think Bose speakers are highly overrated and overpriced. You specify 201's and I recommend strongly against them. I use a pair of 201's for rear speakers in my study (mostly music and pro-logic TV). When I hooked up a receiver and bookshelf speakers to my computer in another room I compared the 201's to a cheap pair of Sony Bookshelf speakers I had and the Sony speakers blew away the 201's. Not even close. It is hard to disagree with Xenon's recommendation. The receiver is a steal and BIC makes some good speakers for the money. I have some of their higher end speakers in my bedroom and have been impressed with their sound quality. I haven't heard the exact ones Xenon recommended but if you remember that with tower speakers you do not have to buy stands it is really hard to beat the price on those. They get down to 35 Hz. so you would not have to get a subwoofer until later.

You'll do good looking at Yamaha, Pioneer or Denon...The one that wont break your walet will be th Yamaha because, its well under $500 -Yamaha has HTIB (Home Theater in a Box) thats $300 that uses their HT-5930 Reciever with 2 Optical and 1 Digital Coax Inputs and 5 Speakers, the Recever alone is $197.99 at a local retailer and the speakers are easily upgradable if you want to improve your sound in the future. Model No. YHT-270 P.S. I dont work at Yamaha but, I do work for an electronics retailer

Hi. I would recommend NAD.Their sound quality beats the competition because they believe the sound is just as important as the video .Ebay is selling the NAD T760 high end A/V Receiver for $399 which is a bargain .The retail price is about $999.
Speakers are always difficult to choose as they all sound different. Does your dad like a bright sound or a more subdued sound .
For a bright sound Klipsch are very good.
for a more balanced sound any of the British speakers are fine.
Ebay is selling a pair of Warfedale E 30 Floor standing speakers for $125 which is a fantastic bargain ;They have been used but are in excellent condition. There retail price is about $600 pair.
Here are the links for the amp and speakers.

For $524 you are getting a superb amp and a pair of top English speakers.Hope you get them .I would definately buy these if i was after new equipment. Good luck.

I think that for about $500 you can get a complete Onkyo home theater system that will sound better than the Sony+Bose choice. The Bose 201's are okay, but you are building your way to an expensive system this way, that won't necessarily sound great. Sony receivers are pretty mediocre these days.
