Identify the cause of AIDS? This question asks what causes AIDS. HIV causes AIDS. If what you were trying to ask was "How did AIDS originate?", it's generally accepted that HIV is a descendant of a Simian Immunodeficiency Virus because certain strains of SIV closely resemble HIV-1 & HIV-2, the two types of HIV.

HIV-2 corresponds to SIVsm, a strain of SIV found in the sooty mangabey monkey in West Africa. The more virulent and pandemic strain, HIV-1, closely resembles SIVcpz, found in chimpanzees. SIVcpz is almost identical to HIV-1. It is thought that wild chimps had acquired the two different simian viruses and they had "cross-bred" to form a third virus, one that could cross species and infect humans.

As to how HIV showed up in humans, the most commonly accepted theory is the "Hunter theory". This theory states that SIVcpz was transferred to humans as a result of chimps being hunted, killed and eaten or their blood getting into cuts or wounds on the hunter. Most of the time, the hunter's body would fight off the SIV but sometimes the virus adapted to the human body and became HIV-1. The fact that there were several different early strains of HIV would support this theory. Each time it passed from chimps to human, it woul develop in a slightly different way and therefore produce a slightly different strain. There are other theories besides the Hunter Theory.
