Those medium format and large format cameras are more like Mack trucks. They are built for heavy loads, not speed.
The Leica R series are Rolls Royces - beautiful to look at, engineered to wazoo, but not the best choice if you need performance. They're mostly purchased by snobs who want to flaunt their wealth. (I can understand getting a Leica M if that's your niche, but who needs an R at those prices?)
The Lambo is a street legal race car and the matching camera is the new Canon 1D Mk 3. This is a professional digital SLR that can do 10 frames per second. This makes it the fastest digital SLR to date, just a tiny bit faster than the previous Canon and current Nikon models, and just as fast as the fastest film SLR (also a Canon). The 1D Mk lll is big, it's expensive, it looks menacing, it has the performance to match those looks, and it's built to take a beating in the real world - it's not (just) for studio work.
I hope this thorough analysis helps ;-)
For most people, just about any digital SLR will do. They are all a cut above point & shoot cameras. Add bonus points for anything by Canon or Nikon. With entry level cameras, it's mostly a matter of personal preference, but Canon and Nikon have the best lens selection and upgrade path.

Depends on what market you're looking at. For consumer use, the highest practical camera to use would be the Panasonic HVX-200, which retails at almost $9000. Above that, you've got broadcast cameras and motion picture cameras, which can cost up to $250000 a piece.
