I believe in God, and I accept that the bible is a spiritual guide book written about God. But I certainly don't see it as equal to God or that we should test what we hear from God against what the bible says. That seems backwards to me. Why do some people tend to put more faith in the bible than they do in what they hear personally from God?

For those of you who asked, yes God does speak to me and no it is not audible. God speaks to my soul. I "hear" him through the process of prayer and meditation, just as I'm assuming he spoke to those who wrote what they "heard" from God in the bible. I just don't believe that God quit communicating with us when the bible went into print.

I think most "God-Fearing" people (most all people too) don't actually believe God is constantly there in their life.

Think about how many things we say and do every day that we wouldn't dare do in front of a young child. But what about when the young child is not there?? Isn't God there?

Of course God is there, but from moment to moment we refuse to acknowledge the divine presence.

Many people are much more comfortable believing in a divine presence from a time long past. And hey, if that helps them out, who am I to judge??

But I tend to agree with you that the Almighty speaks to each one of us constantly, and it's our own ego that chooses to ignore the word.

Cool question.

1. The Holy Bible is the infallible Word of God.
2. The Word of God is what we have to go by in the way of knowing the will of God.
3. If you think that God is personally telling you something, and it does not agree with the Word of God, then it is not God that is telling you what you are being told, like it or no.
4. If you profess to be a Christian, and follow Christ, then you MUST believe that the Bible is the true and infallible Word of God, or your profession of being a believer is false.
5. The Bible is much more than a 'spiritual guide book'. It is the written Word. Jesus was the Word made flesh. God IS the Word, as stated in John 1:1 : "In the beginning the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

If you believe that the Bible is merely a guide book, and about God, instead of being THE Word of God, then you should examine your faith. I tell you this out of Christian love, and no other reason. God wishes that none should perish, butr that all should come to repentance, and so should we.

Well Ive never heard from God contradicting what is in His word. The Bible speaks to us. The Bible can answer any question I have for God. It has answered many questions and will forever Im sure. He speaks to us in many ways. If you hear God speaking something contradictory to the Bible, dont listen then because it is not of God. Peace out.................

Edit: To your comment asker. I know God can talk to us audibly He is God and can do what He wants. But in the Old Testament days the prophets and believers did not have the comforter with them. After Jesus on the day of Pentecost we now have the comforter. That way the Holy Spirit helps direct our lives and speaks to us. Yes God can speak to us audibly. Keep the faith. God Bless and Peace out..............

Great question. The Bible is not the sole infallible guide to Christian doctrine and practice. God did not stop talking to his children after the Bible was published.

Private interpretation of biblical doctrine is not the same as personal reading of the Bible for spiritual growth. The Catholic Church continues to protect the doctrinal interpretation of scripture as a matter beyond the decision of individual readers, but at the same time, in the strongest language encourages the personal, private reading and study of the sacred texts. If the inspired word is read in a spirit of faith and prayer, the Holy Spirit will protect from error and lead the reader to God's true message for his or her life.

The critical word here is "authority." Who has the authority to decide the proper doctrinal interpretation of scripture passages? Many Christians maintain that that this authority belongs to the individual believer. Catholics maintain that this authority was given by Jesus to his followers as a group under their proper leaders; in other words, the authority to decide what is the saving truth and what is the norm of Christian living revealed by the Bible is vested in the Church with its appointed leaders.

Peace and every blessing!

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Luke 21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Also Jesus defeated Satan's temptations by using the Word of God. It is like a doubled edged sword. It is one of the many weapons that Jesus has given us. Do not take the Bible lightly. It's words bring life and victory.

The bible(or word of God) is not placed over God..it is inseparable from Him.

Acts 17:11 - Now the Boreans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

You may not realize what the implication of your statement is?

Just one thing emerges eminently crystal clear from this yahoo forum -- everybody has their own opinion! Are all these differing opinions God's? Is he a God of chaos or is he a God of order?

The belief that a loving God exists - even someone who is marginally interested in the existence of mankind -- demands that he gives them a single set of instructions for how to please him!

Obviously, such a set of instructions must not be directed toward Arabs alone, Jews alone, Poles alone, Eskimos alone, etc. Such a set of instructions would have to apply equally to all races of mankind, to - as it says: (Acts 10:34-35) "For a certainty I perceive that God is not partial, 35 but in every nation the man that fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him. "

Such instructions need be accompanied by proof of God-origin -- the prophecies that prove to Christians that the Bible truly is the word of God.

It is our "simple" task (impossible for many) to like a lego toy assemble the various scriptural points into a single harmonic teaching that permits us to walk the Way, the Truth - that sanctifies. The rejection by many of such simple teachings is what cause these individuals to be disapproved in God's eyes. Is the reason for your problem perhaps because you don't want to obey some commandments you feel burdensome?

So what you and many find backwards reminds me of two final scriptures:

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and incurable; who can know it?

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof is the ways of death.
(Darby)

Because they don't know what it is. As I've said so many times,it is an error to read the Bible as if it were a civil law code or a stack of newspaper clippings; get the general thrust of the ideas, learn to think, move on. Listen to the prompting of your heart. Listen to the voice of God inside you. There is value to the text - a shared value system - but not carried to the point of going chapter & verse all over the place. It's not a road map.

Have you ever heard the expression, "He's a man of his word" (or, "She's a woman of her word)? This is another way of saying that when a person of integrity says they'll do something or something is so, then you can rest assured that they'd do what they promised, or their claims are true respectively. With God's being infinitely righteous and true, whatever He says is absolutely trustworthy. I think that's the main reason why people put so much trust in what God says and hold the Bible so tightly. Just like we can hold people responsible for what they promise or claim, so (in a respectful, humble way, of course) we can hold God responsible for what He promises and claims. However, if any sense of disrespect for God is communicated, one ought to hold such a person responsible for their inappropriate speech.
